Windows 7

Windows 7

Anyone converted over to Windows 7 yet?

I took the plunge last month from XP to the 64bit version, and while it's took ages to get used to (and still getting used to), I am starting to enjoy using it. The improved UI really came into play today when sorting out the styles on here, things like the flip and previews come in much more handy, and the improved taskbar (first I had it on icons, then text and icons, then back to icons and used the previews when you hover over).

On the stability and performance side though so far it's completely flawless, much more stable than XP (and I thought i'd never say that). Does not tend to bog down when you have many explorers open at once (and other things) unlike XP which eventually started buckling.

I bought a Toshiba laptop, running Vista Home Premium, a while back and took up Toshiba offer of upgrade to Windows 7 for £27.90 - had to wait a little while, after release, for discs but, in fairness, Toshiba didn't take money until discs despatched from Germany.

Laptop is 2.18 dual core Pentium with 3Gb ram but still took nearly 3 hours to do the upgrade, in part, due to having to remove most of drivers and then reinstall them once Windows 7 was running.

Windows 7 is a lot cleaner than Vista and, to date, there have been no problems - I'm running 32bit version.

Yup, I was dual booting XP Pro and Win7 beta and then the rc and was so impressed that I actually pre-ordered. This is the first time I've ever pre-ordered any software including games. Speaking of games, most of my games work perfectly ok under Windows7 although there are a few which I've had to keep on XP. I don't believe this is a problem with Windows7, more due to the fact that ATI decided to redesignate my X850XT graphics card as legacy prior to the Win7 release and so didn't provide any new drivers. This seriously peeved me off. However, during the beta and rc testing I made a note of which hardware drivers (eg bluetooth, media keyboard, etc) I needed to install manually and was pleasantly surprised when the final release version actually had or directed me to the drivers I needed. Swish.
So to this point I'm now triple booting Windows 7 Pro (64bit), XP Pro (32bit) and Ubuntu 9.10 (64bit). I would have liked to utilise the XP virtualisation that's available in the Pro version but unfortunately my AMD Athlon x2 4400+ cpu doesn't support the virtualisation. Looks like a new chip and graphics card are going to be on the wishlist.
